Aft through the hawsepipe
"The author joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Seaman in 1947 at the age of 15. He describes life on the lower deck when recruitment of Boy Seamen was coming to an end and the Royal Navy was dealing with the after effects of the war. He tells of his service on a number of ships and his selection as an Upper Yardman, the first rung on the ladder to becoming an officer, a process known as 'going aft through the hawsepipe'. This led to his commission as a sub lieutenant in 1954 [... and ] to the Submarine Service where after serving in a number of positions he was appointed to command HMS/M Aurochs. Bryan's last submarine was HMS/M Valiant and he contrasts this nuclear propelled vessel with the 'agricultural' equipment fitted in RN ships when he began his career."-- Provided by the publisher. The book contains over 20 photographs.
