Pinnace for chasing slaves. Probably attached to HMS London based on Zanzibar c1880-82
British anti-slavery operations off the east coast of Africa were more effective from 1843 onwards. In that year the local Portuguese governors granted British ships the right to arrest slavers within their waters. Naval forces were also given permission to destroy the barracoons (compounds) of slave merchants if found within Portuguese territory.
