Cygnet off St Abbs Head, October 14th 1808. Land sight astern

An original watercolour by Nicholas Pocock and inscribed by hand: "Cygnet off St Abbs Head, October 14th 1808. Land sight astern."

'Cygnet' was one of a fresh batch of 13 ships ordered during the Peace of Amiens to the design of the Merlin Class. She was wrecked off the Courantyne River between Guyana and Suriname on 7 March 1815.

'Cygnet' was commanded by Captain Edward Dix. Previously he had lost five ships in a convoy he was escorting as they foundered in rough weather. (information supplied by Mr Peter Davey, August 2015)
