The presence of a distant ship, apparently at anchor waiting for wind or tide, and cutters, which may be pilot vessels, show that this is a navigable river close to the sea. The obvious candidate in Pocock's work is the Avon near Bristol, perhaps looking north-west towards the Severn estuary from the rocky heights at the west end of the Clifton gorge. It is a reminder that, while Pocock was a marine painter, he also did landscape subjects throughout his life. In this drawing a spectacular view is offset by the figures and the wandering goat seen against skilfully rendered woodland. Unfortunately, as in so much of his watercolour work, this late example has been badly affected by exposure to light. This drawing is one of three dated 1814 (PAF5902, PAF5906 and PAF5907), which were purchased through Colnaghi's, with an earlier series of ten by Pocock of incidents in the life of Nelson, as lot 213 in a Sotheby's sale of 29 April 1935.
