'Algiers. General Engagement Viewed from an eminence South of the City.' [Bombardment of Algiers, 1816]
Medium includes pen and black ink. Inscribed, as title, in pencil with the following additions in the same hand: 'original drawing by W. J. Pocock Esq' and, bottom right, 'engd by R. Hav[ell?]'. It shows Lord Exmouth's attack on the city to release enslaved Christians in 1816, with the fortified lighthouse at the end of the harbour breakwater. Pocock was the naval son of the marine painter Nicholas Pocock, and himself a very competent amateur artist. See also PAF5960, showing the end of the action. [PvdM 3/13]
