A Royal Naval frigate

Medium includes graphite. Previous described as a 'brigantine'; this is a large naval frigate of the early to mid-19th century apparently mounting 23 guns in the broadside which suggests 50 overall counting bow and stern chasers. A frigate of this size would generally be post Napoleonic, the Americans having been the first to build and have success with them against the British in the War of 1812-15. The flying of a Union at the fore, though usually a smaller one, can be a signal for a pilot but the coastline behind is indeterminate as to location. The hand is amateur but the drawing accurate though not fully detailed (no boat davits are visible for example). [PvdM 3/15]
