A peter boat

Medium includes graphite.; inscribed 'C Stanfield'. This drawing presents two possibilities. It may be quite an early one (1820s) while Stanfield was still resolving his signature. That shown here is the same as on a drawing of Old Battersea in the Guildhall Library, which was exhibited as by him at Sunderland in 1979 (Stanfield exhib.cat., illustrated) but which I have always had doubts on. The other is that both are by George Stanfield. The fact that most of the NMM group to which this relates seem to be by George might suggest this, though he did inscribe his father's work in various ways - as may others of the family - for any number of reasons, occasionally in error. There is no positive reason this should not be by Clarkson in terms of quality: in my view now (11/21) that is the more likely and that it is relatively early.[PvdM 9/04]
