The 'Beagle' in Beagle Channel
One of a group of 15 watercolours made by Conrad Martens to illustrate Robert Fitzroy's 'Narrative of the Voyage of the Beagle'. It depicts the 'Beagle', commanded by Fitzroy and carrying Charles Darwin, sailing through Beagle Channel in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. Mountains can be seen on either side of the strait along with a small group of rocks to the left of the ship. The view was taken as a drawing on 4 March 1834 in Martens's fourth 'Beagle' sketchbook and this is the watercolour version from it. See 'Conrad Martens's "Beagle" Pictures', no.143, in R.D. Keynes (ed.) 'The Beagle Record...' (CUP, 1979), pp. 389-402. For notes on the group see PAF6227.
