Distant view of the Andes from the Santa Cruz River
One of a group of 15 watercolours made by Conrad Martens to illustrate Robert Fitzroy's 'Narrative of the Voyage of the Beagle' (1839). It depicts desert ground near the Santa Cruz River with a variety of small plants in the foreground. and the Andes beyond and is similar to both a plate of boats on the Santa Cruz with the same background, facing p. 336 in Fitzroy's 'Narrative', and one of Mystery Plain (f. p. 352) of which it is in effect a variant. It bears the inscription 'No. 6' in pencil top left. See 'Conrad Martens's "Beagle" Pictures', no.188, in R.D. Keynes (ed.), 'The Beagle Record...' (CUP, 1979), pp. 389-402. The drawing is a variant of nos. 186 and 187 as listed by Keynes. For notes on Martens, see PAF6227.
