'Island of Chiloe. View at Point Arenas, July 11'
One of a group of 15 watercolours made by Conrad Martens of Robert Fitzroy's voyage of the 'Beagle'. It depicts a view at Punta Arenas on the north end of the island of Chiloe, on the west coast of Chile, from a drawing taken on 11 July 1834 and titled as above in the first of Martens's four voyage sketchbooks (now, with the third, in Cambridge University Library). There is a broken tree in in the foreground, possibly felled from the stump on the right, along with a path that leads to a clearing with a large hut, back right. Mountains seen behind appear to be those to the north-east across the strait that separates the island from the mainland. See 'Conrad Martens's "Beagle" Pictures', no. 238, in R.D.Keynes (ed.), 'The Beagle Record...' (CUP, 1979), pp.389-402. For notes on Martens, see PAF6227.
