'Santa Cruz River, and distant view of the Andes'

One of a group of 15 watercolours made by Conrad Martens to illustrate Robert Fitzroy's 'Narrative of the Voyage of the Beagle' (1839). It depicts the bank of the Santa Cruz River where several scrubby plants are growing, along with the river itself and the Andes in the background. This forms plate no.16 in the sequence of the second volume of Robert Fitzroy's 'Narrative', engraved by S. Bull and facing p.351. See 'Conrad Martens's"Beagle" Pictures', no.192, in R.D. Keynes (ed.), 'The Beagle Record...' (CUP, 1979), pp.389-402. It is based on a drawing which Keynes lists as no. 191, taken on 3 May 1834, in Martens's first voyage sketchbook now (with the third) in Cambridge University Library. The title here is that of the engraving. For notes on Martens, see PAF6227.
