Montevideo from the north-west
One of a group of 15 watercolours made by Conrad Martens of Robert Fitzroy's voyage of the 'Beagle'. It depicts Montevideo from north-west, as seen from the deck of the 'Beagle' while anchored in the harbour there on 4 December 1833. Nine ships are also seen at anchor and two more are sailing though it. The initial view was taken as a panoramic ink and sepia drawing which appears across two pages of Martens's third voyage sketchbook (ff.21v-22r) now in Cambridge University Library. This watercolour is based on the right side. See 'Conrad Martens's "Beagle" Pictures', no.74, in R.D. Keynes (ed.), 'The Beagle Record...' (CUP, 1979), pp. 389-402. The full panorama from the sketchbook drawing is reproduced by Keynes on pp. 168-9. For notes on Martens, see PAF6227.
