Montevideo from the south-east
One of a group of 15 watercolours made by Conrad Martens of Robert Fitzroy's voyage of the 'Beagle'. It depicts Montevideo harbour seen from the south-east, taken from the deck of the 'Beagle' when anchored there on 4 December 1833. Several moored ships can be seen in the harbour along with one under sail. The hill on the left is the Cerro (136 metres above sea level) with the small Cerro fortress on top commanding the harbour on its east side below and the town (right). The view is based on a panoramic ink and sepia drawing which appears across two pages of Martens's third voyage sketchbook (ff.21v-22r) now in Cambridge University Library. This watercolour version is a development of its left side. See also 'Conrad Martens's 'Beagle' Pictures', no.73, in R.D. Keynes (ed.), 'The Beagle Record...' (CUP, 1979), pp.389-402. The full panorama from the sketchbook drawing is reproduced by Keynes on pp. 168-9. For notes on Martens, see PAF6227.
