Port Louis, Berkeley Sound, Falkland Islands
One of a group of 15 watercolours made by Conrad Martens to illustrate Robert Fitzroy's 'Narrative of the Voyage of the Beagle' (1839), vol.2, f. p. 248. It depicts the settlement of Port Louis with two sheep on the left hand side in the foreground and three more to the right of the settlement. In the background, behind Port Louis, is the inlet known as Berkeley Sound. The 'Beagle' visited Berkeley Sound on 25 March 1834 on its second visit to the Falkland Islands during the voyage. This is plate no.8 in the sequence of the second volume of Fitzroy's 'Narrative', engraved by J.W. Cook, with the title 'Berkeley Sound, Falkland Islands'. See 'Conrad Martens's "Beagle" Pictures', no.166, in R.D. Keynes (ed.), 'The Beagle Record...' (CUP, 1979), pp. 389-402. For notes on Martens, see PAF6227.
