Fuegians in a canoe off Wollaston Island
One of a group of 15 watercolours made by Conrad Martens to illustrate Robert Fitzroy's 'Narrative of the Voyage of the Beagle' (1839), vol. 1, f. p. 433. It depicts five Fuegians in a canoe on the water. A large mountain range can be seen in the background. This watercolour was worked up from drawings made by Martens on 24 February 1834 in his fourth 'Beagle' sketchbook and was engraved by S. Bull as plate no.15 in the sequence of the first volume of Fitzroy's 'Narrative', f. p. 433, with the title 'North east side of Wollaston Island near Cape Horn'. As such it was being used to illustrate the account of the first voyage of 'Beagle', on which Martens was not present. See 'Conrad Martens's "Beagle" Pictures', no.114, in R.D. Keynes (ed.), 'The Beagle Record...' (CUP, 1979), pp. 389-402. For notes on Martens, see PAF6227.
