'A View of the Indians of Tierra del Fuego in their Hut' [Fireside camp scene No 1]

This image - though whether an original one or a reprint remains to be checked - is after a drawing by Buchan, Joseph Banks's landscape and figure artist on Cook's 'Endeavour' voyage of 1768-71. Only the hut and the four figures and child immediately behind the fire are close to Buchan's original and slighter drawing: all the rest was worked up for publication in London after the voyage by Cipriani. Buchan - who appears to have been epileptic - died unexpectedly on arrival at Tahiti in 1769, and did very few sketches before this. [PvdM 8/14]
