Portrait of the 'Zutphen'

Portrait of the ‘Zutphen’, Amsterdam, built circa 1636, 34-40 guns. Stern view, slightly on the starboard quarter. On the tafferel are the arms of Zutphen, with helmet and mantling; below is inscribed ‘tschip ZUTPHEN’. On the rail above are the arms of Amsterdam, supported by two lions. Two shields on the counter, port side a lion rampant, starboard side crossed anchors, for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.

This is an early drawing by the Younger in light pencil and wash. The sheers of the ship and the narrowness of the sterns are features of early ships. It has been approximately dated by the subject and style.

The ‘Zutphen’ was last mentioned in 1665. There was another Amsterdam ship called ‘Zutphen’, also built about 1636; she was of 26-28 guns. In the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, there is a drawing (offset) apparently of the ship of 34-40 guns but showing her much less lofty in the stern (4667). There is also a slight drawing of what appears to be a different Zutphen, perhaps the ship of 26-28 guns (4674).
