A kaag and a wijdschip off the Dutch coast

In the left foreground is a kaag viewed from abaft the starboard beam before the wind. On the right, is a weather bow view of a wijdschip close-hauled on the port track. A Dutch harbour can be seen in the background.

This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Elder, approximately dated by the style. The inscription with the date ‘1677’ is found on other drawings, also palpably of an earlier date.
