A galjoot underway and Dutch ships at anchor off Goeree, 1664

This is a pencil and wash drawing by the Elder. On the right is a starboard quarter view of a galjoot before the wind with her mainsail half set and beyond is a stern view of a ship at anchor. In the centre distance are three flagships, a rear admiral, the admiral of the centre and the admiral of the rear.

The work is inscribed, probably in the Younger’s hand in brown ink, ‘goeree 1664’, and in pencil, ‘hoger en soo mer? dr…g’ (higher and so more), referring to the masts of a ship. In spite of the inscription, the wash and the hand ruled horizon mark it as the work of the Elder
