Dutch ships at anchor in a calm

On the left is a starboard quarter view of a ship with a flag at the main and a pendant at the fore. On the tafferel is a shield with a lion rampant, supported by lions. On the right is a port quarter view of a ship which may be the ‘Drie Helden Davids’, with a States yacht close to starboard. In the middle distance is a stern view of a ship, possibly the ‘Eendracht’, with a flag and pendant at the main.

This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Elder. Robinson believes that this attribution is doubtful as the work is more airily drawn than is usual with him at this period. It has been approximately dated by the subject.
