Two Dutch ships at anchor
On the left is a port broadside view of a ship with her fore and main topsails atrip and shaking in the wind. On the right is a port broadside view of a ship with topsails loosed on the cap and a flag and pendant at the mizzen. There are a number of ships pictured under way in the distance.
This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Elder, which has been approximately dated by the watermark. In Robinson’s view the drawing is of poor quality in crude pencil and a little wash. He believes it may have been drawn over by a later hand, and that it does not seem possible that it is wholly the work of the Elder.
