Large Dutch ships getting underway
In the fore-ground is a port bow view of a ship close-hauled under topsails and mizzen, with another ship passing under her stern. On the right is a galjoot. A third ship with a flag at the main is depicted beyond.
This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Elder, approximately dated by watermarks. In Robinson’s view the drawing is of poor quality in crude pencil and a little wash. He believes it may have been drawn over by a later hand, and that it does not seem possible that it is wholly the work of the Elder.
