Taffrail of a Dutch ship
n the centre of an elaborate design with boys, is a seated female figure holding in the right hand a small shield baring a lion rampant and a lion on each quarter.
A similar rail appears in the drawing of a Dutch two decker, probably imaginary, in the Victoria & Albert Museum. The drawing is inscribed in an early hand that is not Van de Velde’s.
This is an unsigned pencil drawing by the Elder, which has been very approximately dated by the style.
