Portrait of the 'Schager Roos'

The ‘Schager Roos’ viewed from the starboard quarter. On the tafferel is an early form of the arms of Schagen, with a realistic Goliath behind a shield decorated with a rose. On the counter is a battlefield between two tents, showing David striking off the head of Goliath.

In the Boymans Museum, Rotterdam, there is an offset, viewed from the port quarter, inscribed ‘vergadt schaagen’. There is another offset in Scheepvaart Museum, Amsterdam, which is viewed from the same quarter; both have Goliath facing left and are probably not in reverse.

This is an unsigned offset, by the Younger, which is not rubbed on the back. It was taken from an accurate original and has been neatly worked up with pencil, which Robinson believes might be by a later hand. It has been approximately dated by the signature and watermark.
