A smalschip beating to windward in a breeze
A lee broadside view of a large smalschip close-hauled on the port tack. It depicts a man handling the staysail and a flag at the peak. In the centre foreground is a weyschuit with her mast lowered. In the background are a smalschip and other craft before the wind and another smalschip close-hauled on the starboard tack.
This is a drawing, more compositional in character than others, carried out in grey wash over very slight pencil and strengthened by pen and ink. It is by the Younger and is signed with part of the signature, ‘W.V.VJ’. It has been approximately dated by the subject, but according to Robinson it may possibly be of some years later.
