Dutch ships at anchor with a yacht passing

In the middle distance is a spritsail yacht in a light breeze (‘ronders-?’ one of the States deputies), with a wehschuit on her starboard beam. In the background are partly rigged ships lying at anchor off a low shore, including De Ruyter, flag and pendant at the main (Ruijter); Aert van Nes, flag at the main (van nes) in the right distance; and an uninscribed flagship with flag at the mizzen and pendant at the fore.

The work probably depicts part of a Dutch fleet refitting in the Wielings after the Four Days’ Battle, 1666.

This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Younger, with the ensign of the yacht outlined in brown ink. It has been attributed to him on account of the delicacy of the pencil and wash; the pronounced rake of the mainmasts is also characteristic of his work at this period. It has been approximately dated by the style and watermarks.
