The 'Cleveland' yacht in a sea

A lee broadside view of the ‘Cleveland’, close hauled on the starboard tack in a fresh breeze, throwing the water over her bow. The topsail is lowered half way and the jib is shivered. There is a flag at the main. Another yacht can be seen in the right background.

Inscribed ‘b bla’ (blue), indicating a patch of blue sky.

This is a pencil and wash drawing by the Younger signed in brown ink, ‘W.V.VJ’.

This drawing is a study for the oil painting, dated 1673, in the Ingram Collection. It has been identified from drawings of the royal visit to the fleet in July 1673 in which the ‘Cleveland’ appears (Boymans Museum, Rotterdam, 110, 122, 125). The painting differs from the drawing in that a ship is introduced in the left distance and the yacht is given a pendant instead of a flag. There are similar drawings in the British Museum (B.39; CM.63) and in the Ingram Collection (651).
