An English Indiaman? From Van Kook to his friend J. T. Caird Esq, November 1859
An English Indiaman viewed from the port bow. It is certainly a merchant ship if the incomplete tier of guns on the lower deck is correctly drawn. No instance is known of the channels being above the upper deck ports in an English two-decker man-of-war until circa 1745, but this did not occur in French ships in the second half of the 17th century, and may have occurred in merchant ships.
This is a pencil drawing by the Younger, signed ‘W.V.VJ’. However, the signature may be of a much later date.
Freely and accurately drawn, but possibly based on a weak offset. Approximately dated by the watermark and style.
