An English fourth rate in a light quartering breeze
A near view of a fourth rate from slightly abaft the starboard beam with the wind on the port quarter; under fore course, topsails, spritsail and spritsail topsail. There is an awning on the quarterdeck. The fore and main topmastheads are not shown.
Inscribed ‘parsiren Mastaat’ (? Passing Majesty).
This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Elder. It is in a light wash in the manner of the Younger, but the rapid pencil suggests the work of the Elder. The drawing was possibly made on the occasion of the King’s visit to the ‘Tiger’.
