The King leaving Westminster after the Coronation, 23 April-3 May 1685

A crowded scene of barges, yachts and boats off Westminster as the King leaves in his barge, which is shown starboard broadside on the right with the royal standard in the bow. In the centre is a small yacht in port bow view. In the left foreground, a barge with a large canopy aft is being pulled away from the shore. In the left distance is a tower of Westminster Abbey.

This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Elder which has been strengthened with pen and ink. It is one of a series of drawings by van de Velde about the coronation of James II.
