The action at Vigo from the eastward
View from the eastward showing in the foreground the French and Spanish escaping in boats from their ships, which are lying across the harbour, some burning and most unrigged. Beyond them, the English and Dutch now past the fort on the south side are forcing their way through the boom; the flags of Hopsonn and of Van der Goes are shown in the centre. Rooke’s squadron is depicted on the horizon. It is inscribed in a late hand ‘D23’.
This is a drawing by the Younger in pen and brown ink and grey wash. It is signed and dated ‘W.V.Velde J 1707.’
