Studies of gunports

Studies of four gundeck ports with their positions shown in a key above. The first marked ‘a’ )?altered from 3) is the one fourth from the bow and shows the portlid hauled right up; the second marked ‘b’ is the third from the bow and shows the lid horizontal; the thirdmarked ‘3’ is third from the stern and is an empty port with the lid above the horizontal; the fourth marked ‘1’ is second from the bow and is the same as the third but has a gun in it.

It is inscribed on the back in grey ink ‘desse omslage Nober 1 Lanschape / belde gekleet als nackte en anders / van verscheijde messters / Nober 2 reesijlle van differ/ente, acsie stilte en haerd Winde / Nober 3 het selve als nomer / 2, maer daer is bij veel sijl / wreck en schepijes met hear Tuijen / Nober 1-2-3’ (These contan (1) landscapes, figure studies draped and nude and others by various masters; (2) square-sails in different conditions, becalmed and in strong winds; (3) as (2) byt containing a great many sails and small boats with their rigging).
