A States yacht joining the Dutch fleet at anchor

In the centre foreground, a lee quarter view of a States yacht with a light breeze on the port quarter (?koeln-trouwer) sailing towards a ship in the right middle-distance with flag and pendant at the main; the ship is saluting. Another yacht (brouwer) is under sail close to starboard of the commander-in-chiel. In the left centre, the port bow view of the admiral of the van at anchor. Land is depicted in the left distance.

The yachts of Koelentrouwer and Brouwer are noted also on a drawing of 1664 in the Boymans-van Beunigen Museum, Rotterdam (19).

This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Elder. Some of the wash in the foreground and on the yacht may have been added by an 18th century hand.
