Lunar crater model
Lunar crater model - Copernicus, in glass fronted wooden frame. Frame is stained and varnished, slightly scratched at the corners. Brass hooks on the back for hanging. Label on the base of the glass gives details of the crater. Signed 'D. Renart' on the lower right.
Dionis Renart (1878-1946) was a sculptor from Barcelona who was an active member of several local astronomical societies from the year 1909 until his death. He was a founder member of the Sociedad Astronómica de Barcelona (SAB) and became director of its lunar section. In 1912 Renart and his fellow SAB colleagues organised a public exhibition about the Moon (‘Exposición General De Estudios Lunares’) at the University of Barcelona. He was also a regular correspondent with various selenographers in the British Astronomical Association such as William Porthouse, Walter Goodacre, Patrick Moore and Hugh Percy Wilkins.
Another example of Renart’s ‘Copernicus’ crater model can be seen on display at the headquarters of the Sociedad Astronómica de España y América in Barcelona.
