Lunar mountain model
Lunar mountain model - Piton. Plaster model mounted in purple velvet in wooden, gilded, moulded glass fronted frame. Label at the bottom of the glass gives details of the lunar mountain, maker of the model and its presentation. Frame has a hinged back and brass hooks for hanging. Corners of frame slightly damaged. Stored in a cardboard box. Inscribed ‘D. Renart’ on the lower left and ‘Piton’ on the lower right.

Piton is a small isolated mountain on the surface of the large plain known as Mare Imbrium. Its height is 7,000 feet. By D. Renart, Barcelona, Spain. 1900.

Dionis Renart (1878-1946) was a sculptor from Barcelona who was an active member of several local astronomical societies from the year 1909 until his death. He was a founder member of the Sociedad Astronómica de Barcelona (SAB) and became director of its lunar section. In 1912 Renart and his fellow SAB colleagues organised a public exhibition about the Moon (‘Exposición General De Estudios Lunares’) at the University of Barcelona. He was also a regular correspondent with various selenographers in the British Astronomical Association such as William Porthouse, Walter Goodacre, Patrick Moore and Hugh Percy Wilkins.
