A Dutch ship and a wijdschip becalmed in a Dutch harbour
On the left, a port quarter view of a ship at anchor with her sails loosed. There are two vessels alongside to starboard. To the right, a starboard broadside view of a wijdschip becalmed. There is a river bank in the foreground with posts marked by a stick and two weyschuits at the water’s edge. A tower and village can be seen in the distance.
Inscribed on the back (cut) ‘…was de kappiteijn maer nu /…(?een) andere groot schip daerop macken’ (? Was the ‘Kapitein’ but now made into another large ship). Possibly referring to the 80-gun ship ‘Kapitein Generaal’ built in 1683, which was also known as the ‘Admiraal Generaal’.
This is an unsigned pencil and wash rawing by the Younger.
