An English flagship becalmed saluting
This may be a compositional drawing relating to one of van de Velde’s late English period calms. On the left is a starboard bow view of an English two-decker becalmed. A flag flies from the mainmast and there are men furling the main topsail. She is firing a salute to port as a barge pulls away across her bow towards a galliot-rigged yacht seen starboard broadside in the centre. On the right there is a merchant ship at anchor with several boats near her. The drawing is unsigned.
