A hoeker near a shore
The drawing is rubbed on the back and has probably had an offset taken from it. It is one of a group of drawings in the collection in pen and ink and wash which van de Velde made to illustrate his method of drawing ships so that they appear in the correct relative sizes when shown at different distances. There are ruled lines for the horizon, the waterlines of the hoeker and of the further boat, and a line for the waterline of the nearer boat. There are also three vertical lines marked in brown ink with the figure 8 and the drawing is inscribed with part of the word nota. As in PAF7024 and PAF7025, the horizon line has been ruled and the vessels and the figures in the boats have been drawn so that the horizon line passes through them or above them at a height of eight feet above the water. A hoeker was a Dutch fishing vessel. The drawing is unsigned.
