Assistance in tow of Pioneer
The watercolour depicts two vessels against a coastal background. 'Assistance' (ex 'Baboo' merchantman) is shown on the left, with 'Pioneer' towing her on icy waters.
Walter William May was lieutenant of 'Assistance' in Captain Sir Edward Belcher's Arctic expedition in 1852 in search of Sir John Franklin. The 'Assistance' was abandoned in the ice in 1854. W. W. May was promoted to commander on his return from the Arctic.
The 'Baboo' is recorded in Lloyds Register in 1852, but J. J. Colledge (Ships of the Royal Navy 1969) lists her as purchased 1850.
