The Elements of Astronomy and Geography Explained
A set of 40 engraved and hand-coloured cards within a coloured cardboard slipcase, entitled 'The Elements of Astronomy and Geography Explained on 40 Cards beautifully Engraved and Coloured. By the Abbé Paris'. The set was published on 15 July 1795 by John Wallis of 16 Ludgate Street, London. John Wallis, with his sons John and Edward, was a prolific publisher of board games, such as the 'Science in Sport' game AST1199, in the late 18th and early 19th century.
Each numbered card has a printed and hand-coloured image relating to astronomy, geometry or geography, with an explanatory text on the reverse. Subjects include diagrams of astronomical principles, a map of the world, an armillary sphere, and diagrams of where the various peoples of the world live. These cards were designed to teach elementary knowledge of these subjects in an engaging manner, probably within a domestic environment. The topics and the manner in which they are treated are typical of the period and are, for example, similar to those in the French engravings AST0015.
