A distant starboard near beam view, just forward of broadside, of the German battlecruiser SMS Goeben (1911) at anchor at Patras. Goeben, along with the cruiser Breslau, had been dispatched to the Mediterranean Sea due to the outbreak of the First Balkan War in 1912. She visited a number of ports from April 1913 until the First World War.
Hooper was in the Mediterranean at this time as an acting sub-lieutenant on the armoured cruiser HMS Defence (1907) between 10 January 1913 and February 1914. [TNA, ADM 196/54 page 75, service record]
