A View of London and Westminster, &c. from One Tree Hill, in Greenwich Park
Title also in French; no 4 top right; no date but dated from first state (PAF7620). A panoramic view sweeping from Blackwall reach in the east across London and terminating with the Observatory, with elegant figure groups in the Park in the foreground. It is a considerable feat of compressed perspective but not entirely topographically successful, since the result is the appearance of an arc of trees enclosing a parterre, all on higher ground than in fact exists below the Observatory. See also PAI7093 (earlier version, 1744), PAH3269 (1746). There are also later versions of 1774 and 1794.
