A View of Greenwich Hospital taken from the River

An axial perspective view of the Hospital, looking south from a position above the river towards the Queen's House, with the Royal Observatory also visible on the hill in Greenwich Park. PAF7623 is a hand-coloured version of the same image. Both are inscribed 'Sir Christr. Wren Architect' below the image, left; 'Millam Sculp.', right. 'Printed for Robt Sayer, opposite Fetter Lane, Fleet Street', is centred below the English title (see above) which is followed on the same line by the French title, 'Vue de l'Hospital [sic] de Greenwich de la Cote de la Riviere'.

The stern of a small Royal Naval warship going downriver is visible on the left; that of an English royal yacht firing a salute as it heads upstream is on the right. In the centre is what appears to be a sprit-rigged Dutch dogger heading downstream in port-bow view. Other small boats in the river include Thames passenger wherries (one under sail) while various figures appear on the paved riverfront walk and in the Hospital grounds.

This print is one of at least three same-size versions from different publishers. The prime version, possibly itself derived from the larger panoramic views by R. Parr (PAH3278) or Thomas Lawranson (PAH3290) appears to be that engraved by J. June as 'A Prospect of Greenwich Hospital from the River' (PAF7633, proof before publisher imprint; and PAF7632). This also bears the Wren inscription and a French title and the present example is apparently derived from it, with a noticeable reduction of graphic quality, especially in the figures. A third version, further simplified and reduced in quality, was also printed for 'Robt. Withy at the Dunciad. Cornhill' (see PAF7634). This copies the 'View' version of the English and French title of the present example but omits both the Wren and any engraver inscription.
