Independencia (1874)
A whole plate negative. A slightly distant port bow view, taken from wide off the bow, of the Brazilian armoured turret ship Independencia (1874) at moorings in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. She has an auxiliary barque rig with double topsails but no topgallants. Two lighters are alongside aft. She is in the process of undergoing her sea trials. Note the steampipes on the sides of her funnels, reputedly because the funnels had been incorrectly fitted sideways. She was purchased by the British Government in March 1878 and taken to Portsmouth Dockyard for completion. Tilbury is in the background. This is a copy of negative number G1669.
