Nocturnal

The nocturnal is much larger than usual and was probably designed as a teaching aid. Use of paper for the scales is unusual.

Wooden nocturnal with paper scales for use with Little Bear. Lathe-turned handle held in place by a turned wooden screw. Both scales covered with paper scales, coloured and marked in black ink. The back is plain.
Main disc: Zodiac scale (white) divided anticlockwise to named sign divided to 1 deg for each sign. Date scale (pink) divided anticlockwise to named months numbered to days. Meridian transit (lowest point) at 23rd degree of Scorpio.
Rotable disc: Hour scale (yellow) numbered anticlockwise. Teeth mark hours and half-hours; larger tooth to mark 12.
Within this is a patterned ring in blue and white. In the centre is a green circle with the stars of the Great and Little Bears marked and the names of the constellations given.
Rotatable pointer with rectangular arm and lathe-turned centre.
The paper is very much discoloured.
On the reverse there is the remainder of a sticky label with the words 'E. Imber[..]', 'Ant[..]ario' and 'Milano'.
