U.S. Ship Independance razee, bearing the broad pennant of Com. Charles Stewart, struck by a squall, off the coast of America, Sept 8th 1842
The Independence is drawn from the starboard bow quarter heeling well over to port in a storm. A large wave threatens to overwhelm the starboard bow and the gun ports appear to be open. The lower courses of sails on the fore and main masts are shredded, while the other sails remain furled. Sailors are visible climbing the starboard ratlines of the fore mast and in the crosstree of the main mast.
