H.M. Brig Curlew of 10 guns Comr Edmd Norcott Off Bembridge Coming into Spithead, Septr 1st 1838 Returning from the Coast of Africa
A lithograph by A.B. Sturdee of the 10-gun brig 'Curlew' from her starboard broadside coming into Spithead on 1 September 1838, after a successful commission off the west coast of Africa, during which she took five slaving vessels. A ship's boat with six figures on board figures in the right foreground, with the cliffs of Spithead in the background. Following 14 years on near-continuous service from 1830 onwards, mostly on anti-slavery patrols, she was paid off at Portsmouth in 1844. During her retirement years, she was seemingly fitted as a mortar brig. The success or otherwise of the experiment is uncertain, as 'Curlew' was taken to pieces in 1848.
