The Pensylvania [sic]
This coloured lithograph, labelled as depicting the Pensylvania [sic], shows a naval vessel from the port broadside. Only her lower course sails, lower topsails, one staysail and her spanker are raised. She is flying the American flag at her stern and several other flags at her mastheads. A few figures can be seen on her deck. Other sailing vessels can be seen in the distance.
There is some doubt as to whether the vessel in this lithograph is the Pennsylvania (compare with PAF8077). The Pennsylvania was the largest sailing warship ever built for the US Navy, with four gun decks, three under cover. The vessel depicted here has only three gun decks, with two covered. The inscription on PAF8077 states 140 guns, but this inscription states only 80 guns.
