HMS 'Canada'
Signed by artist. Though faded from exposure, this is a competently rendered and reasonably accurate depiction of the battleship 'Canada' (1913) in the immediate post-war period of late 1918 or 1919, with flying off platforms on 'B' and 'X' turrets. The artist Eric Tufnell (1888-1979), began life as a naval officer and saw long service including in the First World War before retiring as a commander in 1929, after which his amateur painting of ships, in watercolour, became a successful means to supplement his pension. He saw reserve service in the Second World War, where he met the much younger woman who (after his divorce in 1946) became his second wife and continued to have a huge output to his death on 18 July 1979 at the age of 91. From the 1940s/50s his pictures were sold through the Parker Gallery in London, in large quantity but only at around £10, many going to America.
