Horizontal dial for latitude 48° North. It has an octagonal dial-plate on which are engraved seven concentric scales for hours and minutes, allowing the time to be read to the nearest minute. The gnomon is hinged and folds flat when not in use. Within it, a plumb line and bob suspend freely. The compass, with cardinal points named in Latin, has a magnetic variation scale at 30° either side of North. The instrument is supported by three turned brass feet.
